South Dakota Trip Day #5

October 10, 2024

Day #5 began with a stop at Lakota Lake in Custer State Park. The dogs used to love to come here and get some free roam.

Then it was onto the Wildlife Loop where we spotted a few of these Pronghorns. I have always called these antelope, but come to find out that is a common mistake. They are not antelope but instead often mistaken for an antelope, though it is actually a member of the Antilocapridae family, with giraffes and okapi being its closest relatives.

Then it was on to Needles Highway and this is an image of the “Eye of the Needle” after which the highway is reportedly named.

Other images from along Needles Highway. Plenty of photographic opportunities on this drive.

Needles Eye Tunnel, one of several single-lane tunnels along this route and Iron Mountain Highway. Don’t plan to visit with an oversized vehicle.

Horse Thief Lake has become somewhat of a final day tradition when we visit the Black Hills. Tomorrow it is back to “real life.”

The bridge at Horse Thief Lake. We have many images of Lisa walking the boys over this bridge in trips past.
